Writing a letter was once the only way for most people to communicate without being in the same room, and it was as normal as breathing. One of the most famous epistolary novels of all time, for instance, is Les liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, which uses 400 pages of letters to tell the tale of two members of the French upper class who spend the late 1700s using their seductive wiles to exploit others, boasting to each other about it all the while.
How times change - today, the characters would probably just instant message or video chat on their smartphones or laptops. While communication is undoubtedly easier and quicker than it used to be, there are times when letters have to be written by lettings professionals, notably when officially communicating with tenants. In their letters, the characters of Les liaisons dangereuseswere at least able to reveal their innermost thoughts and schemes, which meant that every time they touched quill to parchment they were able to write something different and expressive. Property managers and agents are not so fortunate - every letter will tend to be more or less the same (barring different details for the tenant who will be receiving it), which can make them tedious and time-consuming to write.
